Benaki Museum of Greek Culture
Koumpari 1, Athens
DESCRIPTION
The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture is housed in one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings in Athens, favourably located in the historic centre of the city, right opposite the lush greenery of the National Garden and the garden of the Presidential Mansion and in the proximity of the Greek Parliament.
It is the only museum in the world featuring Greek history and art from prehistory up to the 20th century.
More than 40,000 items of this valuable collection illustrate the long and fascinating history of the Greek Civilization through a spectacular historical panorama: from the Neolithic Age, the Antiquity and the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period, the fall of Constantinople (1453) and the centuries of Frankish and Ottoman occupation, the outbreak of the Greek Revolution and the Greek War of Independence in 1821, to the development of the new Greek state (1830) and down to 1922, the year in which the Asia Minor disaster took place.
Free audio guided tour using QR codes is available in Greek, English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese.
