EVENT
Captain Michalis – Freedom or Death
VENUE
Alkmini Theater
Alkminis 8-12, Athens
DATE
27 - 29 May 2022
DESCRIPTION
The show aims to bring the modern viewer in contact with one of the most important texts of world literature and with respect to the style, language and reflection of the author, to bring the deep existential issues of man to light.
The face of the fictional hero, of this bravely expended revolutionary, Captain Michalis, becomes a symbol of the modern struggling man – regardless of his origin, place of residence, religion and beliefs – the man who struggles for physical and mental survival.
The story of Captain Michalis takes place at the end of the 19th century in Crete, when Crete was fighting, once again, for its freedom in the revolution of 1889. The work, however, although connected to the particular homeland of the author (Nikos Kazantzakis), as it’s imbued with the spirit of freedom that defines human nature, very quickly gained the pan-Hellenic and international recognition.
Freedom and Humanity are two structural concepts in Kazantzakis’ world.
