SUMMARY:First Cemetery of Athens: An Open-Air Sculpture Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek.\n\nArchaeologist and guide Michalis Giohalas leads a tour through the sculpture garden of the First Cemetery of Athens\, in collaboration with the This is Athens City Festival.\n\nDescribed in the early 20th century by sculptor Thomas Thomopoulos as encompassing “the entire movement of modern sculpture\,” the cemetery stands as an open-air museum where art\, memory and history coexist.\n\nFrom the great names of Greek sculpture to the personal stories behind the graves\, this walk offers a fascinating journey through time. It reveals little-known aspects of funerary art in modern Greece—along with very human tales of vanity\, greed\, artistic rivalries and unfulfilled love.

SUMMARY:Remembrance Route 40 - 44
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek. \n\nThe Memory Route is a tribute to the thousands of anonymous victims of hunger during the occupation\, as well as the victims of executions by the occupying forces. As we search for the past in the present\, stories of the place and its people unfold. At the same time\, the 3rd Cemetery is reintroduced to the public as a historical site of memory for those who “didn’t live” to see our country free. The tour will be conducted by Zetta Antonopoulou\, Historian-Archaeologist\, and Eliza Neofytou\, Architect-Museologist.

SUMMARY:First Cemetery of Athens: An Open-Air Sculpture Gallery II
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek.\n\nArchaeologist and guide Michalis Giohalas leads a special tour through the sculpture garden of the First Cemetery of Athens\, in collaboration with the This is Athens City Festival.\n\nBeyond the “Sleeping Female Figure”\nThe memorial of Sofia Afentaki—widely known as the “Sleeping Female Figure” by Yannoulis Chalepas—is perhaps the most iconic sculpture in the cemetery. But it is far from the only one of artistic significance.\n\nThis alternative route leads visitors off the main thoroughfares and into quieter paths that reveal a lesser-known\, yet equally remarkable\, side of Athens’ open-air sculpture garden. Along the uphill lanes\, we encounter mausoleums of celebrated dead\, where mortals meet immortals—and grand aspirations for remembrance coexist with overwhelming silence.

SUMMARY:Guided tour at the EMST in the exhibition WOMEN TOGETHER
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek. \n\nThe exhibition “WOMEN\, TOGETHER” features works exclusively by women artists and takes a clear stance on a critical issue in both art history and contemporary society: the underrepresentation of women and the urgent need for action towards gender equality. While most of the works do not focus explicitly on womanhood\, they raise pressing questions around equality\, oppression and otherness. They engage with contemporary and historical sociopolitical narratives\, as well as aspects of personal and collective memory and identity.

SUMMARY:A Tour of Rizokastro and the Anafiotika Area
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek. \n\nArchaeologist Michalis Giohalas\, in collaboration with the This is Athens City Festival\, leads a walking tour through Anafiotika and its layered history. Rizokastro—the area nestled at the root of the Sacred Rock—and Anafiotika are among the most historic quarters of Athens. Using surviving monuments and buildings\, remnants of lost structures\, and even the street names as our guide\, we’ll attempt to piece together the memory and image of a city that feels both different and not entirely lost. This journey will tune in to the lingering echoes of beliefs\, myths and legends tied to ancient places that still endure in the present day.\n\nA reservation is required.

SUMMARY:From Earth to Sky
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek. A special walking tour exploring the archaeological and astronomical landmarks around the hills surrounding the National Observatory\, timed with the magical Athenian sunset. The journey begins on the western hills of the Acropolis: Pnyx\, the Hill of the Nymphs\, and Philopappos (the Hill of the Muses)\, where the layers of ancient Athens’ daily life and history unfold. Highlights include the Sanctuary of the Muses\, the impressive tomb of Prince Philopappos\, the Kimonian Graves\, the church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris\, the ancient districts of Melite and Koile with their carved rock remains\, the historic Pnyx assembly site\, Meton’s Heliotropion – an ancient observatory – and the so-called “Prison of Socrates.” All these points are beautifully linked by the stone-paved paths of Dimitris Pikionis\, a unique project blending the old and the new\, the past and the present. From here\, sweeping views over the city open up\, leading to the Sina building on the Hill of the Nymphs\, home to Greece’s first research institution: the National Observatory of Athens\, founded in 1842. At the Geoastrophysics Museum\, visitors will learn about the modern history of astronomy in Greece. The walk concludes with a sky observation session through one of the Observatory’s telescopes.

SUMMARY:Guided Tour of the Alekos Fassianos Museum
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek. \n\nAs part of International Museum Day\, the Alekos Fassianos Museum offers a guided tour for 30 people. \n\nThe exhibition aims to introduce the breadth of Alekos Fassianos’ work\, featuring pieces from 1954 until the end of his life. It includes early works from the 1960s\, influenced by abstraction during his early years in Paris\, works inspired by Byzantine art\, collages\, mixed techniques\, as well as both lesser-known and widely recognized paintings showcasing Fassianos’ distinctive touch. The Myth of His Neighborhood unfolds through works depicting images and experiences from his childhood in Agios Pavlos and his wanderings through Athens. Heroes from his childhood merge with figures from Greek mythology\, creating the timeless hero—the human being. Beyond the paintings\, the exhibition also highlights the artist’s multifaceted personality\, showcasing handmade objects\, furniture\, lighting\, as well as texts he wrote\, books he illustrated\, and a rich archive of his involvement in set design and costume design for Aristophanes’ comedies and Eugène Ionesco’s plays. \n\nThe exhibition unfolds in a handcrafted architectural creation by Kyriakos Krokos\, where every detail\, from the door knobs to the cupboard handles\, the nails in the mirrors\, to the frescoes and mosaic floors\, was curated by Fassianos himself. The Alekos Fassianos Museum is of great significance for the contemporary artistic and architectural map of Athens\, as it is one of the few museums in the world where the collaboration between the artist and the architect supports the dialogue between the works and the space that houses them. \n\nMeeting point: Outside the Museum.

SUMMARY:First Cemetery of Athens: An Open-Air Sculpture Gallery II
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek.\n\nArchaeologist and guide Michalis Giohalas leads a tour through the sculpture garden of the First Cemetery of Athens\, in collaboration with the This is Athens City Festival.\n\nBeyond the Sleeping Female Figure\nThe tomb of Sofia Afentaki—immortalised by Yannoulis Chalepas in his iconic sculpture The Sleeping Female Figure—is the most recognisable work in the First Cemetery of Athens. But it is by no means the only one worth discovering.\n\nThis walk follows an alternative route\, away from the central and well-trodden paths\, to uncover a quieter yet equally captivating side of Athens’ open-air sculpture gallery. Along its uphill alleys\, we’ll encounter the mausoleums of illustrious figures—spaces where mortals converse with immortals\, and grand visions of legacy meet the silence of eternity.
