SUMMARY:Anything but Marble
DESCRIPTION:This activity is only available in Greek. \n\nFor nearly 60 years\, British artist Phyllida Barlow created monumental installations that were both threatening and playful. She made large-scale sculptures using cheap\, humble materials such as cardboard\, fabric\, plywood\, gauze\, and plaster. As she herself states\, “In the past\, sculpture carried historical narratives. Marble dominated and celebrated individuals.” One of the individuals traditionally celebrated in sculpture was Darwin\, who was a distant relative of hers—something she carefully concealed to avoid being seen as “privileged” because of her lineage. By rejecting traditional sculpture\, she renounced her own past through her work\, forging her unique artistic identity. Drawing inspiration from her practice\, we will work with humble materials and create small-scale hanging sculptures. Three of the greatest composers of all time—who never met\, but connected through musical script.\n\nJohann Sebastian Bach discovered the music of Antonio Vivaldi through the written page\, learning from the Venetian master’s compositional thinking. Though both German and born in 1685\, Bach and Handel never crossed paths—yet Bach transcribed several works by Handel\, drawn to his style. DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of International Museum Day\, the Alekos Fassianos Museum offers free admission to the residents and visitors of the city. The exhibition aims to introduce the breadth of Alekos Fassianos’ work\, featuring pieces from 1954 until the end of the artist’s life. \n\nThe exhibition includes early works from the 1960s\, showcasing his abstract style from his early years in Paris\, works influenced by Byzantine art\, collages\, mixed media\, as well as both less-known and widely recognized paintings that capture Fassianos’ distinctive touch. The Myth of His Neighborhood unfolds through works that depict images and experiences from his childhood in Agios Pavlos\, the neighborhood where he grew up\, and his wanderings through Athens. Heroes from his childhood intertwine with figures from Greek mythology\, creating the timeless hero—the human being. Beyond the paintings\, the exhibition also aims to highlight Fassianos’ multifaceted personality by showcasing handmade objects\, furniture\, lighting\, as well as texts he wrote\, books he illustrated\, and a rich archival collection of his involvement in set design and costume design for Aristophanes’ comedies and Eugène Ionesco’s plays. \n\nThe exhibition is displayed within a handcrafted architectural creation by Kyriakos Krokos\, where every detail\, from the door knobs to the cupboard handles\, the nails in the mirrors\, to the frescoes and mosaic floors\, is curated by Fassianos himself. The Alekos Fassianos Museum holds significant importance for the contemporary artistic and architectural map of Athens\, being one of the few museums in the world where the collaboration between the artist and architect fosters a dialogue between the works and the space that houses them.
