SUMMARY:St Dionysius the Areopagite\, The Saint of Athens: Guided Tours of the dedicated Churches II
DESCRIPTION:Architectural grandeur meets spiritual resonance in this special tour exploring the history\, design\, and refined aesthetics of the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Dionysius Areopagite. Dedicated to the patron saint of Athens\, this landmark stands proudly alongside the Athenian Trilogy on Panepistimiou Street\, carrying a vital piece of the capital’s cultural and architectural legacy.\n\nLed by art historian Despina Paraskeva\, we will uncover the combined brilliance of Leo von Klenze and Lysandros Kaftanzoglou\, explore the works of painter Guglielmo Bilancioni\, and learn the story of the great patron Giovanni Battista Serpieri. After taking a close look at the cathedral’s rich sculptural and wood-carved decor\, the experience culminates in a short\, evocative musical programme. Eirini Anastasiou will take to the church organ\, adding a profound\, mystical dimension to the visit.\n\nDon’t miss the twin guided tour of the Greek Orthodox Church\, a moment that creates an artistic dialogue between two faiths and two distinct expressions of modern Greek creativity\, right in the heart of the urban fabric.\n\nMeeting Point: Main Entrance of the Cathedral (Panepistimiou St).\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.\n\n

SUMMARY:A Walk through Rizokastro & Anafiotika
DESCRIPTION:Rizokastro and Anafiotika\, two of the most enchanting and singular corners of Athens\, become the backdrop for a journey that weaves together history\, memory\, and the inexhaustible charm of Plaka. Archaeologist and guide Michalis Giohalas invites us on a route that goes far beyond a typical tour; it is a quest for Athenian identity where the layers of time remain vividly visible.\n\nGuided by surviving monuments\, the ghosts of lost buildings\, and the hidden details we usually overlook\, this walk attempts to reconstruct a different Athens\, but certainly not a lost one. Even those who believe they know Plaka inside out will have the chance to see it through a fresh lens where myth\, legend\, and topography collide. It is an experience that bridges academic insight with the evocative\, nostalgic power of our capital’s most authentic neighbourhood.\n\nMeeting Point: Acropolis Metro Station\, Makriyianni exit. \n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Historical Walk Around the National Archaeological Museum
DESCRIPTION:The National Archaeological Museum invites the public to a fascinating evening walk led by archaeologist Dr. Kostas Paschalidis. This guided tour unfolds as a concise chronicle of the modern Greek state\, told through the history of a small yet emblematic site in the very heart of Athens.\n\nThe route begins in the days when the Museum’s grounds were nothing more than a vineyard\, continues through the period when the area served as a club for Bavarian soldiers\, and reaches the construction of what would become the largest museum of the ancient world.\n\nParticipants will discover the adventures of an entire nation through the stories surrounding the building itself: from the dramatic concealment of antiquities on the eve of World War II and the Museum’s role in the Greek Resistance\, to the events of the Polytechnic uprising. A walk that reveals the Museum not only as a repository of ancient treasures\, but also as a living witness to modern Greek history and the social transformations that shaped contemporary Athens.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Guided Tours of the Cavafy Archive
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the This is Athens City Festival marks its fifth anniversary with a truly special collaboration. We’ve teamed up with the Onassis Foundation to invite you on a deeply personal journey through the life of one of the world’s most influential poets. For the first time as part of the festival\, we’re stepping inside a stunning 1910 listed building on Phrynichou Street. Since late 2023\, this spot in the heart of Plaka has become the new home of the Cavafy Archive\, and now\, its doors are opening for a series of exclusive guided tours.\n\nIt’s a rare chance to get up close and personal with the world of C.P. Cavafy by wandering through five specially curated rooms that recreate the atmosphere of his legendary home in Alexandria. Among the treasures\, you will find personal relics such as original furniture\, mementos\, and even the poet’s death mask\, alongside a remarkable collection of 966 surviving volumes in the library. The experience also showcases inspired art\, with works ranging from Theodore Ralli and Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika to contemporary artists moved by his poetry. Perhaps most poignantly\, the tour reveals the universe of Cavafy’s Athens through personal diaries and glowing letters from literary greats like Angelos Sikelianos\, revealing the poet’s deep\, timeless connection to this city.\n\nTo celebrate this new partnership\, the Onassis Foundation is offering 20 free guided tours throughout the month for festival-goers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dive deep into history\, memory\, and world-class art.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

It is an experience that bridges academic insight with the evocative\, nostalgic power of our capital’s most authentic neighbourhood.\n\nMeeting Point: Acropolis Metro Station\, Makriyianni exit.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.\n\n

SUMMARY:Guided Tour at the City of Athens Museum
DESCRIPTION:The City of Athens Museum (Vouros-Eutaxias Foundation) will welcome us for a rather special look at the capital’s modern history. The tour spans two iconic buildings that tell the story of a city finding its feet.\nWe start at the legendary “Old Palace”\, the first residence of King Otto and Queen Amalia. It’s a space deeply intertwined with the very first steps Athens took as a modern European capital. Here\, you’ll see the city through the objects and grand rooms that helped define its new\, royal identity.\n\nThe journey then moves into the second building of the complex\, the former home of the Dekozis-Vouros family. This is where things get personal. It offers a much more intimate glimpse into Athenian “high society” life\, revealing the aesthetics\, the daily habits\, and domestic charm of the 19th and early 20th centuries.\n\nThrough these collections and the stunning architecture itself\, you’ll witness the trajectory of a city that was rapidly expanding and shaping its modern self. It’s a tour that beautifully bridges the gap between Athens’ grand political history and its private\, everyday heart.\n\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.
