SUMMARY:Tilda Swinton: Ongoing
DESCRIPTION:Marking its fifth year with a great collaboration with Onassis Stegi\, we offer an encounter with one of the season’s most keenly discussed artistic propositions. At its centre is Tilda Swinton\, a figure who has long moved with deliberate\, almost defiant ease between cinema\, fashion\, and the visual arts\, each appearance less a performance than a considered cultural gesture.\n\nThe exhibition Ongoing\, presented at the recently inaugurated Onassis Ready\, resists the tidy framing of a retrospective. Instead\, it unfolds as an active\, evolving dialogue between Swinton and a close circle of collaborators. Among them Pedro Almodóvar\, Luca Guadagnino\, Jim Jarmusch\, Joanna Hogg\, Tim Walker\, Apichatpong Weerasethakul\, Olivier Saillard\, and Derek Jarman. Through short films\, installations\, and photographic works\, the exhibition gently dismantles and reassembles the layers of her artistic identity\, moving between the dreamlike and the intimately personal. The result is a multi-stranded exhibition that illuminates her rich creative journey and her profound connection to contemporary art.\n\n20 invitations are available from the Onassis Stegi for 22\, 24\, 29\, and 31 May – 5 invitations per day.\n\nBookings open one week before each event at 12:00 noon and are made via this page.

SUMMARY:Studying the Human Figure with Jeff Koons – ‘Shells and Shine: A Contemporary Venus!’
DESCRIPTION:Young creators (aged 7–11) embark on an exciting journey through time\, starting from the timeless figure of Venus. From the Paleolithic Venus of Lespugue to Jeff Koons’ dazzling contemporary reinterpretation\, children discover how art transforms across the centuries. Guided by visual artist Vivian Emmanouilidou and educator Magda Athanasiou\, participants experiment with volume and texture\, creating three-dimensional compositions made of shells that are transformed into radiant\, contemporary sculptures. This hands-on experience connects prehistoric expression with pop aesthetics\, encouraging imagination and free artistic creation through play. The workshop is only available in Greek.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Guided Tour at the National Historical Museum
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the grand\, stately building with the bronze statue of Kolokotronis on horseback out front. It’s nothing less than the Old Parliament House\, the very heart of Greece’s early political acts\, and it is throwing open its doors for the This is Athens City Festival.\n\nThis isn’t just a wander through a dusty museum; it’s a guided journey through the National Historical Museum. You’ll be stepping into the original debating chamber where the big decisions that shaped modern Greece were hammered out. Our guide will lead you through a stunning collection that charts the Greek story from the fall of Constantinople through to the 20th century. You’ll see personal heirlooms and everyday objects from the Greek Revolution\, intricate traditional costumes that are basically 19th-century high fashion\, historic weaponry\, and archival treasures that tell the story of a nation finding its feet.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Guided Tour: Dimitra Siaterli’s "Cohesive Networks"
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to a special guided tour of Dimitra Siaterli’s solo exhibition\, a journey that peels back the deeper layers of a visual world spanning four decades. SUMMARY:Guided Tours of the Cavafy Archive
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the This is Athens City Festival marks its fifth anniversary with a truly special collaboration. We’ve teamed up with the Onassis Foundation to invite you on a deeply personal journey through the life of one of the world’s most influential poets. For the first time as part of the festival\, we’re stepping inside a stunning 1910 listed building on Phrynichou Street. Since late 2023\, this spot in the heart of Plaka has become the new home of the Cavafy Archive\, and now\, its doors are opening for a series of exclusive guided tours.\n\nIt’s a rare chance to get up close and personal with the world of C.P. Cavafy by wandering through five specially curated rooms that recreate the atmosphere of his legendary home in Alexandria. Among the treasures\, you will find personal relics such as original furniture\, mementos\, and even the poet’s death mask\, alongside a remarkable collection of 966 surviving volumes in the library. The experience also showcases inspired art\, with works ranging from Theodore Ralli and Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika to contemporary artists moved by his poetry. Perhaps most poignantly\, the tour reveals the universe of Cavafy’s Athens through personal diaries and glowing letters from literary greats like Angelos Sikelianos\, revealing the poet’s deep\, timeless connection to this city.\n\nTo celebrate this new partnership\, the Onassis Foundation is offering 20 free guided tours throughout the month for festival-goers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dive deep into history\, memory\, and world-class art.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Canvas Bag Meets Vintage Flair
DESCRIPTION:How were traditional costumes made\, and what secrets are hidden within their vibrant colours\, intricate patterns\, and fine details? \n\nThe National Historical Museum invites the younger friends of the This is Athens City Festival 2026 to an interactive session that brings folk tradition to life creatively and delightfully. The journey begins with a guided exploration of the Museum’s Folk Collection\, where children will get up close to the richness of Greek attire\, discovering the materials\, techniques\, and sheer craftsmanship that went into every handmade piece. But the experience doesn’t end with looking. Transitioning from observation to creation\, and under the expert guidance of the museum curators\, children will try their hand at the traditional block printing technique to decorate their very own canvas tote bag. By the end of the session\, folk art is no longer just a museum exhibit\, but their personal masterpiece to carry home. This is a brilliant opportunity for children to connect history with imagination and discover the past through their own hands.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Intervention at the House of Identities
DESCRIPTION:The This is Athens City Festival 2026 invites us to create the “House of Identities\,” a small-scale structure made of construction mesh that hosts countless human figures engraved on zinc sheets. Every visitor who passes through the “house’s” small door is not merely a spectator\, but a co-creator: invited to leave their personal mark\, their fingerprint\, and a small message on special paper suspended from the walls.\n\nThis “little house” has no roof\, remaining open to space and time\, while its walls are built day by day from the signatures and memories of the people who visit it.

SUMMARY:NO MOTTO
DESCRIPTION:As part of the This is Athens City Festival 2026\, contemporary art finds its voice in “NO MOTTO”\, featuring the work of Markos Ntemkas and curated by Dr. Eva Kekou. This presentation of conceptual works invites the public on an aesthetic and philosophical journey exploring the boundaries of imagery\, meaning\, and artistic identity. Eschewing easy definitions or predetermined conclusions\, the exhibition carves out a space for observation and personal interpretation.\n\nThe central axis here is self-reflexivity: the way in which art can turn inward to examine its own nature\, function\, and presence. In “NO MOTTO”\, form and content exist in a constant dialogue\, creating a field of contemplation that offers no ready-made answers\, but instead proposes a more substantial way of seeing. This is an exhibition for those who appreciate a contemporary visual language that challenges\, questions\, and leaves room for a second thought.\nOpening: Sunday\, May 24\, 18:00–22:00 \nExhibition duration: 24–30 May \nOpening hours: Monday–Friday: 18:00–21:00; Saturday: 12:30–15:00.

SUMMARY:ONX.Showcase.Athens.2026: Human in the Loop
DESCRIPTION:Onassis Foundation presents for the first time in Athens the immersive art exhibition ONX Showcase\, a celebration of creativity\, technological innovation\, and new forms of artistic expression. Since its founding in 2020\, ONX\, the global digital cultures platform of the Onassis Foundation\, has supported artists experimenting at the boundaries of art\, science\, and emerging technologies. Centred around the thematic axis “Human in the Loop”\, the exhibition reflects on what it means to remain human in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence\, seeking out the handmade and the analogue within a deeply technological environment.\n\nThe programme features ten works from the Onassis ONX and AiR ecosystem\, six new commissions from the ONX Seeds programme\, and works from the Onassis Collection by Andreas Angelidakis\, Noemi Iglesias Barrios\, Spyros Poros\, and Theo Triantafyllidis. Alongside the exhibition\, a series of talks and professional gatherings bring together artists\, technologists\, curators\, producers\, and cultural practitioners\, foregrounding the emerging artistic languages shaping the future of digital culture.\n\nWith the participation of internationally acclaimed artists whose work has been presented at festivals including Sundance Film Festival\, Ars Electronica\, SXSW\, and Venice International Film Festival\, ONX.Showcase.Athens. 2026 offers a rare opportunity to experience immersive art in its most advanced and transformative form.\n\nParticipating artists include Gabriel Barcia-Colombo\, Adam Cole\, Marc Da Costa\, Dionysios\, Andrew Thomas Huang\, Gregor Kuschmirz\, Giannis Kranidiotis\, Marion Lasserre\, Zisis Bliatkas\, Matthew Niederhauser\, Giorgos Papafigos\, Sarah Rothberg\, Ali Santana\, sister sylvester\, Ivona Tau\, Ontroerend Goed\, and Playfool.

SUMMARY:Athens: Urban Frictions
DESCRIPTION:The Macart Cultural Space\, in collaboration with iFocus Gallery\, presents “Athens: Urban Frictions”\, a collective photographic exploration of the Greek capital. Thirty contemporary Greek and international photographers attempt to capture the city’s identity through diverse and often conflicting lenses\, highlighting its inherent contradictions\, tensions\, and ongoing transformations.\n\nIn this exhibition\, Athens is not approached as a singular\, static image\, but as a field of constant negotiation between memory\, lived experience\, and change. Black-and-white and colour works\, analogue shots\, and contemporary digital perspectives weave a narrative where the act of wandering becomes a way of “reading” the city. The show explores Athens in the space between noise and silence\, the visible and the suggestive\, and the weight of history versus a constantly shifting present. It is an invitation to view the capital not as a mere backdrop\, but as a living\, complex entity.\n\nExhibition duration: 6–30 May\n\nOpening: 6 May at 19:00.\n\nOpening hours: Monday–Friday: 10:00–18:00; Saturday: 10:00–14:00. Closed on Sunday.

SUMMARY:Constantine Xenakis – Dimitris Chiotopoulos: Writing and Trace Two Journeys into the Labyrinth
DESCRIPTION:Ersi Gallery hosts a deep and unexpectedly poetic dialogue between two masters of the symbolic: Constantine Xenakis and Dimitris Chiotopoulos.\n\nWriting and Trace explores the moment when a mark\, a symbol\, or a simple gesture transcends its everyday use to become a language of its own. Dense with meaning and open to endless interpretation. The internationally acclaimed Xenakis employs codes\, hieroglyphs\, and signals from modern communication to offer a sharp commentary on how meaning is constructed in our digital age. In contrast\, Chiotopoulos brings a more interior\, tactile search to the gallery\, weaving in archetypal shapes and calligraphy elements.\n\nTogether\, they transform the “Labyrinth” into a space of discovery. This isn’t just an exhibition; it’s an invitation to stroll through a maze of signs and silences\, losing yourself in the traces of culture only to find your own way back.\n\nExhibition duration: 5–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Monday–Friday: 11:30–14:30 & 17:30–20:30; Saturday: 11:30–15:00. Closed on Sunday.

SUMMARY:Guided Tour at the City of Athens Museum
DESCRIPTION:The City of Athens Museum (Vouros-Eutaxias Foundation) will welcome us for a rather special look at the capital’s modern history. The tour spans two iconic buildings that tell the story of a city finding its feet.\nWe start at the legendary “Old Palace”\, the first residence of King Otto and Queen Amalia. It’s a space deeply intertwined with the very first steps Athens took as a modern European capital. Here\, you’ll see the city through the objects and grand rooms that helped define its new\, royal identity.\n\nThe journey then moves into the second building of the complex\, the former home of the Dekozis-Vouros family. This is where things get personal. It offers a much more intimate glimpse into Athenian “high society” life\, revealing the aesthetics\, the daily habits\, and domestic charm of the 19th and early 20th centuries.\n\nThrough these collections and the stunning architecture itself\, you’ll witness the trajectory of a city that was rapidly expanding and shaping its modern self. It’s a tour that beautifully bridges the gap between Athens’ grand political history and its private\, everyday heart.\n\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Ecological Translation
DESCRIPTION:The Goethe-Institut Athen presents the exhibition Ecological Translation\, a bold exploration of our relationship with the natural world. \n\nWhat if technology allowed us to speak directly with animals and plants? \n\nDrawing on emerging legal frameworks that recognise rights for rivers and ecosystems\, the exhibition examines the use of artificial intelligence and remote sensing as a potential “Google Translate” between humans and the environment. Through the work of an international group of artist visitors are invited to reflect on whether we can truly translate the radical otherness of beings such as bats or whales. The exhibition\, which opened on 28 April\, forms part of a broader interdisciplinary symposium that seeks to highlight both the opportunities and the risks of new scientific approaches reminding us that the complexity of the climate crisis demands a new\, shared language of communication with the planet.\n\nArtists:\nKyriaki Goni\nAbelardo Gil-Fournier\nNona Inescu\nAgata Ingarden\nBill Kouligas\nRaffaela Naldi Rossano\nZoë Paul\nJenna Sutela\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May.\n\nOpening hours: Monday–Thursday: 08:00–22:00\, Friday: 08:00–17:00 & Saturday: 08:00–14:30 (23 May: closed).

SUMMARY:Nikolas Klironomos: A Retrospective (1985–2025)
DESCRIPTION:This major retrospective is a brilliant place to start looking into the work of Nikolas Klironomos\, an artist who has spent decades masterfully blurring the lines between fine art and set design.\n\nKlironomos doesn’t just paint; he “directs” his canvases. Think of him as a visual filmmaker who takes the raw\, chaotic energy of Athens\, our streets\, our faces\, our light\, and filters it through a lens of memory and emotion.\n\nIn this exhibition\, the mundane meets the dreamlike. You’ll see the changing seasons of the city tangled up with those small\, quirky moments that make life in Athens so unique. By playing with vibrant palettes and some rather unusual materials\, he creates scenes that feel like they’re in constant motion. It’s a bit like catching a glimpse of Athens from a moving Vespa—everything is fluid\, poetic\, and strangely alive.\n\nThis exhibition is designed to speak directly to your heart and your memory. What’s truly clever is how Klironomos takes “the bits and bobs” of life\, those fragmented\, everyday moments\, and gives them a sense of grandeur and importance. It’s a proper journey into the hidden corners of time and what it actually means to be human.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday–Saturday: 11:00–19:00; Sunday: 10:00–16:00. Closed on Monday.

SUMMARY:Panos Charalambous: COLUMBIA
DESCRIPTION:At CITRONNE Gallery\, Panos Charalambous invites us to step into a “sonic room” that speaks directly to the memory of the city. The journey begins in 2006\, the year the historic Columbia vinyl record factory in Rizoupoli was demolished\, symbolically closing a massive chapter of Greek music history. Columbia was a place where the voices\, songs\, and moments that shaped our collective soundscape were once etched into wax.\n\nCharalambous transforms the gallery into a visceral\, immersive installation. Here\, you are invited to walk across a “sound floor\,” literally treading on the echoes of a memory that refuses to fade. It is a haunting reminder that music doesn’t vanish with the buildings that once housed it; instead\, it survives through emotion\, shared experience\, and our collective imagination.\n\nIn a city that is constantly evolving\, COLUMBIA is a profound meditation on decay\, remembrance\, and our deep-seated need to keep our shared history alive.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 11:00–20:00; Wednesday\, Saturday: 11:00–16:00. Closed on Monday & Sunday.
