SUMMARY:Athens Photo World: Michalis Pappas – Mitos\, The Thread of Greece

SUMMARY:Photography Exhibition: Oleksandr Glyadyelov – Look at Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Philosophy Festival / European Dialogues organised by the French Institute of Greece\, the public spaces of Athens are transformed into an open platform for historical memory and reflection. The This is Athens City Festival hosts the outdoor photography exhibition Look at Ukraine by Oleksandr Glyadyelov. The artist’s powerful photographs\, presented on large-scale display panels\, will be installed throughout the duration of the Philosophy Festival around the National Garden.\n\nBased on the retrospective tribute exhibition presented in Kyiv in September 2025\, the exhibition offers a deeply sensitive and humanistic reflection on the contemporary history of Ukraine\, from its independence in 1991 to the ongoing war. Through his lens\, Glyadyelov captures with honesty the mobilisation of citizens\, the fragility of everyday life\, and the immense challenges faced by Ukrainian families. A significant photographic intervention that invites passers-by and visitors to the city centre to pause and confront history through a profoundly human-centred perspective.

SUMMARY:The Gift That Remained Unopened!
DESCRIPTION:A secret parcel\, hidden among the centuries-old thickets of the National Garden\, awaits its first explorers. For the Athens City Festival 2026\, the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation invites young citizens to an unconventional adventure blurring the lines between detective work and fine art. Armed with magnifying glasses and “scientific” gloves\, children will track the artistic footprints of the legendary Stephen Antonakos.\n\nDrawing inspiration from the artist’s iconic “Travel Collages” and “Packages”\, participants dive into the world of conceptual art through immersive role-playing and team missions. They will discover how a simple journey transforms into a collage and how a sealed package can contain entire universes\, eventually crafting their own original masterpieces using organic materials gathered directly from the Garden’s ecosystem.\n\nFor 50 years\, this mysterious “gift” has sat patiently in the heart of the city’s most iconic green space. By turning Antonakos’ legacy of sealed artworks into a living\, breathing mystery\, this event offers a rare\, hands-on exploration of the intersection between art and the environment.\n\nMeeting point: Entrance on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue\, opposite the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:A Historical Walk with Dr. Iordanis Papadopoulos: Kypriadou
DESCRIPTION:On the fringes of Patisia\, where the urban density gives way to a different architectural rhythm and a quieter Athenian breath\, the City of Athens Festival invites us to discover the Kypriadou district. Guided by Dr. Iordanis Papadopoulos\, this walk unravels the history of a model neighbourhood\, Athens’ original “garden city” that set the blueprint for suburban areas like Psychiko and Nea Smyrni.\n\nAs we wander past grand villas\, hidden ateliers\, and streets that preserve the imprint of a different era\, we’ll trace the footsteps of the so-called “Kypriadis School\,” as the great artist Yannis Moralis once named it. From the architectural vision of Aristotelis Zachos to the homes of legends like Parthenis\, Kontoglou\, Pikionis\, and Argyros\, this neighbourhood emerges as a living canvas of the famed ’30s Generation and the Athenian intelligentsia. This tour connects modernism\, memory\, and everyday life\, illuminating a side of the city that remains charming\, unexpected\, and deeply Athenian.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Fairytales with Naya Oikonomopoulou
DESCRIPTION:Now\, silence… and all ears!\n\nFolk tales from the oral traditions of Greece and around the world form a precious mosaic of human experience. These are stories not written on paper\, but shaped from mouth to mouth\, travelling through the centuries to reach us today\, carrying with them the fears\, hopes and dreams of entire generations.\n\nIn this performance\, storytelling becomes more than narration—it becomes a living experience. Traditional songs act as the sonic memory of our culture\, awakening emotions and images from a time when people gathered around a hearth to share stories. At the same time\, original music embraces these ancient tales\, giving them a fresh\, contemporary breath that bridges past and present.\n\nMusic: Maria Georgopoulou\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:First Cemetery of Athens: An Open-Air Gallery 2
DESCRIPTION:Yannoulis Chalepas’ “Sleeping Maiden” is\, without a doubt\, the most iconic sculpture of the First Cemetery of Athens\, but the beauty of this open-air museum goes far beyond its famous resident.\nAs part of the City of Athens Festival 2026\, archaeologist and certified guide Michalis Giohalas invites us to step off the main path and follow an alternative route through the climbing alleys of the cemetery. Beyond the well-trodden spots\, we will discover a lesser-known yet equally staggering side of Modern Greek sculpture. Here\, imposing mausoleums and monuments stand where the grand passion for legacy meets a crushing silence—a space where the mortal seems to converse with the immortal. This guided tour illuminates unknown masterpieces and human stories\, offering a deeply immersive look into the artistic and historical heritage of Athens.\n\nMeeting Point: Main Entrance of the First Cemetery of Athens (end of Anapafseos Street).\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.
