SUMMARY:ATHENS: AM EXTENDED
DESCRIPTION:A high-tech\, multi-sensory deep dive into the city’s midnight soul with photographer Thanasis Karatzas and multimedia director Byron Nikolopoulos teaming up to breathe life into 88 iconic black-and-white shots of Athens captured between 2008 and 2022. Hosted at the cutting-edge METACOSMOI space right in the heart of the city\, they’ve turned static images into a living\, breathing digital playground.\n\nUsing Augmented Reality (AR)\, VR\, and sleek video projections\, the exhibition takes classic street photography and adds movement\, sound\, and a splash of colour. The project is fresh off international acclaim at Paris Photo and Photo London\, so we’re thrilled to bring it back to the very streets that inspired it. You’ll see Athens as a “palimpsest”\, a city of layers where ancient history\, gritty urban vibes\, and the digital future all sit at the same table.\n\n

SUMMARY:Cheimerinoi Kolymvites
DESCRIPTION:The National Archaeological Museum Courtyard is an incredibly “Athenian” setting\, an atmospheric\, hidden garden that will fill with the unmistakable sound and timeless\, bohemian spirit of the legendary Greek band Cheimerinoi Kolymvites (literally “The Winter Swimmers”). They’ll be performing songs that speak of love\, solitude\, good company\, and the quiet magic of the night.\n\nThese are tracks that have been etched into the musical memory of generations\, now returning in a setting designed for proper listening and reflection\, enveloped by the city’s more stunning antiquities. Think of this evening as an encounter with a different side of Greek song—one that is subtle\, understated\, yet deeply meaningful. It’s a night of poetic simplicity and warmth\, reminding us that true artistic power is often found in the finest of details.

SUMMARY:Athens: Urban Frictions
DESCRIPTION:The Macart Cultural Space\, in collaboration with iFocus Gallery\, presents “Athens: Urban Frictions”\, a collective photographic exploration of the Greek capital. Thirty contemporary Greek and international photographers attempt to capture the city’s identity through diverse and often conflicting lenses\, highlighting its inherent contradictions\, tensions\, and ongoing transformations.\n\nIn this exhibition\, Athens is not approached as a singular\, static image\, but as a field of constant negotiation between memory\, lived experience\, and change. Black-and-white and colour works\, analogue shots\, and contemporary digital perspectives weave a narrative where the act of wandering becomes a way of “reading” the city. The show explores Athens in the space between noise and silence\, the visible and the suggestive\, and the weight of history versus a constantly shifting present. It is an invitation to view the capital not as a mere backdrop\, but as a living\, complex entity.\n\nExhibition duration: 6–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Monday–Friday: 10:00–18:00; Saturday: 10:00–14:00. Closed on Sunday.

SUMMARY:Vera Stavrinadi: Pop-Up Frequencies
DESCRIPTION:Astrolavos Art Gallery hosts “Pop-Up Frequencies”\, a striking sculptural intervention by Vera Stavrinadi that occupies the gallery space with undeniable presence and style. Monumental sculptures in the form of contemporary totems alternate with smaller floor and wall-mounted pieces\, all bathed in the vibrant\, fluorescent hues of pop culture and comic- book aesthetics.\n\nWith a sarcastic yet playful approach that draws on the world of children’s toys\, the artist opens a fragmented dialogue regarding the values of modern society. By casting a critical eye on consumerist tropes and contemporary superficiality\, Stavrinadi successfully marries a sharp perspective with an irresistibly joyful dimension. This experience invites us to view the “idols” of our everyday lives through a new\, luminous\, and subversive frequency.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 12:00–16:00 and 17:00–20:00; Saturday: 11:00–15:00. Closed on Sunday & Monday.

SUMMARY:Thematic Tour: The Depiction of the Face through the Collections of the National Gallery
DESCRIPTION:In the main building of the National Gallery\, the public has the opportunity to participate in a thematic tour dedicated to the art of portraiture. The tour explores the timeless need of artists\, as well as historical figures\, to keep their likeness alive through the centuries\, beginning with the simple\, and almost ascetic forms of the Saints in the late 16th century.\n\nAs the tour progresses towards the present day\, visitors observe radical changes in materials and techniques\, discovering how the long tradition of painting was transformed to render human psychography with a contemporary perspective. It is a journey into the gaze and the form\, illuminating the evolution of identity and artistic expression through the treasures of the country’s most important gallery.\n\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Historical Walk: "Women in the Resistance"
DESCRIPTION:History is often written in the singular\, but the soul of Athens was defended by many. As part of the Athens City Festival 2026\, historian Menelaos Charalampidis invites us on a specialized commemorative walk through the city streets\, illuminating a pivotal yet often overlooked chapter: the defiant role of women during the Occupation.\n\nThrough personal testimonies\, rare documents\, and vivid storytelling\, the footsteps of iconic figures like Lela Karagianni\, Elektra Apostolou\, and Ioulia Bimba come to life. From the protesters who stood unflinching before enemy tanks to the female partisans of the eastern neighbourhoods\, the city reveals a different\, fiercely dynamic face.\n\nThis isn’t just a journey through the struggle for liberation; it’s the story of women claiming a new place in post-war society. Join us for an experience that bridges past and present\, inviting you to “re-read” the history of Athens through the voices of the trailblazers who were kept on the margins for far too long.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

Drawing influence from the allegorical and monumental traditions of painting\, as well as the kinetic energy and narrative drive of comic books\, the artist creates dense\, multi-layered compositions teeming with parallel action.\n\nOn his canvases\, joy coexists with fear\, irony with drama\, and the mundane with the hyperbolic. These modern-day “heroes” are not supernatural figures\, but characters of contemporary life navigating fragility\, intensity\, and humour. The exhibition offers a vivid and penetrating look at our world\, suggesting that the comic and the tragic are\, ultimately\, two sides of the same narrative coin.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 12:00–16:00 and 17:00–20:00; Saturday: 11:00–15:00. Closed on Sunday & Monday.

SUMMARY:Dimitris Rentoumis: Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Crux Galerie presents the solo exhibition of Dimitris Rentoumis. Through his new series of works\, the artist “dialogues” with the transient and fragile nature of paper\, experimenting with the transition from a two-dimensional image to a three-dimensional variable materiality. He transforms paper surfaces into sculptural forms that occupy the space.\n\nWith a rich journey that includes studies at the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Netherlands\, as well as participation in prestigious programmes such as Jan van Eyck and Onassis Air\, the creator brings a proposal to Athens that balances the delicacy of the material with the dynamics of the installation.\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for the public to discover how paper can “breathe” and develop beyond the boundaries of the frame\, creating a living visual environment.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Wednesday–Friday: 12:00–20:00; Saturday: 12:00–16:00. Closed on Monday\, Tuesday & Sunday.

SUMMARY:Evgenia Grigoraki: Roadside Shrines
DESCRIPTION:The Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Centre presents a solo exhibition by Evgenia Grigoraki titled “Roadside Shrines”\, a photographic series focusing on a familiar yet often overlooked element of the Greek landscape. Through a personal and direct lens\, the artist approaches these shrines not merely as markers of memory and faith\, but as small\, paradoxical presences that persist in inhabiting public spaces—alongside roads\, around bends\, and throughout our daily commutes.\n\nThe strength of the exhibition lies in this experiential\, almost tender observation. Under Grigoraki’s gaze\, these shrines are transformed into objects of artistic exploration\, highlighting their enduring stability and the specific meaning they continue to hold within Greek society. It is an exhibition that bridges the everyday gaze with folk tradition\, inviting us to pause once more before one of the most characteristic and poignant sights of the Greek roadside. Presented alongside Marilia Fotopoulou’s exhibition\, the show will offer you the chance to explore two different yet complementary photographic interpretations of the same subject.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–23 May\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Thursday: 15:00–20:00; Wednesday\, Friday: 12:00–20:00; Saturday: 12:00–16:00. Closed on Monday & Sunday.

SUMMARY:A Guided Tour in the World of Niki de Saint Phalle
DESCRIPTION:The This is Athens City Festival 2026 invites you to dive into the revolutionary world of one of the 20th century’s most fearless icons. In these two specially curated guided tours of the exhibition “From Shooting to Freedom\,” you’ll discover how Niki de Saint Phalle transformed pain and rage into a lasting celebration of colour and rebirth. This is the first time her work has been presented on this scale in Greece\, tracing her journey from the radical Tirs (shooting performances) to her exuberant\, world-famous Nanas.\n\nThrough a vibrant collection of paintings\, collages\, and sculptures\, the exhibition unfolds like a child’s game\, yet retains the raw power of a woman who challenged every boundary of art and society. Catch these rebellious masterpieces tucked into the intimate spaces of the MOMus-Alex Mylonas Museum\, across from the Parthenon.\n\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs
DESCRIPTION:As the This is Athens City Festival kicks off an exciting new partnership with Onassis Stegi\, we offer a look through the lens of a true visionary. In his first-ever solo photography exhibition in Greece\, the internationally acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos presents 182 works that map out his unique visual language through a different medium.\n\nThis is a brilliant opportunity to get to know a whole other side of his artistry\, stepping away from the cinema screen and into the still image. In the exhibition space of the Stegi\, visitors encounter photographs created on the margins of film productions such as Poor Things (2023)\, Kinds of Kindness (2024)\, and Bugonia (2025)\, shot in cities like New Orleans and Atlanta\, as well as in studios in Budapest\, where entire cities were constructed as cinematic sets\, alongside a new series of works from Athens and the Aegean.\n\nThrough these images\, the familiar\, the strange\, and the silent take on a new intensity. It’s Lanthimos at his most raw\, showcasing his deeply personal and recognisable authorship. Whether he’s capturing a landscape or the human form\, you’re invited to see the world through the singular\, idiosyncratic gaze of one of the world’s most significant contemporary creators.\n\n20 invitations are available from the Onassis Stegi for 7\, 8\, 14\, and 15 May – 5 invitations per day.\n\nBookings open one week before each event at 12:00 noon and are made via this page.

SUMMARY:Dr. Yiannis N. Tzortzis: Greenland: Blue Ice
DESCRIPTION:The a.antonopoulou.art gallery presents the new solo photography exhibition by Dr. Giannis Tzortzis\, which is held under the auspices of the Embassy of Denmark in Greece. Through a “green photographic journey” carried out in August 2024\, the artist captures the “barometer of global climate change”: Greenland.\n\nThe exhibition is a powerful “visual cry of anguish\,” documenting UNESCO World Heritage sites at risk and the everyday life of the Indigenous Inuit people. Tzortzis’ experiential images highlight the fragile beauty of the landscape and the dramatic reality of the climate crisis\, reminding us that ice takes on a deep blue color just before it disappears forever.\n\nThe exhibition is accompanied by texts by writer Maria Giannayou and academic Christos Zerefos\, enriching the dialogue between art\, science\, and environmental awareness.\n\nOpening: Thursday\, May 7 at 19:00.\n\nExhibition duration: 7–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 14:00–20:00; Saturday: 12:00–16:00. SUMMARY:Giorgos Louloudis: The Path of Light – The Innate
DESCRIPTION:In his new solo exhibition at Gallery Genesis\, Giorgos Louloudis places light centre stage\, moving beyond its role as a mere physical phenomenon. The artist turns his focus toward the small Greek chapels and their unique relationship with the landscape\, transforming them into potent symbols of hope\, silence\, and internal quest. These works function as quiet stations of contemplation\, where physical space and psychological experience are inextricably linked.\n\nThrough a powerful expressionist style\, Louloudis’s painted surfaces gain emotional intensity and depth. Light becomes an inner necessity\, a force that guides the viewer toward a deeply personal reading of the work. This exhibition speaks to the universal need for solace and the enduring power of hope\, asserting art’s ability to serve as a point of renewal and reflection in demanding times.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening: Thursday\, May 7 at 20:00. \nExhibition duration: 7–30 May \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 12:00–21:00; Saturday: 12:00–15:00. SUMMARY:Guided Tour at the City of Athens Museum
DESCRIPTION:The City of Athens Museum (Vouros-Eutaxias Foundation) will welcome us for a rather special look at the capital’s modern history. The tour spans two iconic buildings that tell the story of a city finding its feet.\nWe start at the legendary “Old Palace”\, the first residence of King Otto and Queen Amalia. It’s a space deeply intertwined with the very first steps Athens took as a modern European capital. Here\, you’ll see the city through the objects and grand rooms that helped define its new\, royal identity.\n\nThe journey then moves into the second building of the complex\, the former home of the Dekozis-Vouros family. This is where things get personal. It offers a much more intimate glimpse into Athenian “high society” life\, revealing the aesthetics\, the daily habits\, and domestic charm of the 19th and early 20th centuries.\n\nThrough these collections and the stunning architecture itself\, you’ll witness the trajectory of a city that was rapidly expanding and shaping its modern self. It’s a tour that beautifully bridges the gap between Athens’ grand political history and its private\, everyday heart.\n\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Nikos Kalafatis: Primavera
DESCRIPTION:Nikos Kalafatis presents Primavera\, an exhibition curated by Athena Schina\, at Technohoros Art Gallery. It is a vibrant\, optimistic\, and deeply personal tribute to the natural world. For Kalafatis\, nature isn’t just a subject; it’s a constant source of daily observation and artistic discovery. Taking the energy of spring as his starting point\, the artist creates a world where simple\, discarded materials are granted a second life. Driftwood\, metals\, ropes\, feathers\, and various objets trouvés are meticulously transformed through painting\, sculpture\, and engraving into works brimming with poetry\, ingenuity\, and a subtle touch of wit.\nThis isn’t just a traditional look at the outdoors; it’s an invitation to adopt a lighter\, more observant way of being\, one that is open to the “everyday miracles” of the city and beyond. In the heart of the festival\, Primavera proves that spring isn’t just a season; it’s a creative state of mind.\n\nExhibition duration: 8–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 12:00–20:00; Wednesday\, Saturday: 10:00–18:00. Closed on Sunday & Monday.
