SUMMARY:Dimitra Siaterli: Cohesive Networks
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition by Dimitra Siaterli is presented as a fascinating journey connecting the artist’s past and present. Spanning from the 1980s and 90s right through to her brand-new productions\, the exhibition unfolds in three sections that feel like acts in a play. Visitors will wander through a world of strange minerals\, fossils\, and mythical creatures\, eventually arriving at an “anatomy” of the human form through striking sculptures\, meshes\, and engravings. Tiny human figures seem to leap out from labyrinths and processions\, creating a playful tension between myth and reality. This is an experiential journey that reminds us of the vital human need for connection and our place as a precious part of a vast\, collective network. It is a study of coexistence\, delivered in a visual language that speaks to the heart about the time and space we all share.\n\n\nOpening: 14 May at 19:00.\n\nExhibition duration: 14–31 May\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 11:00–19:00 & Sunday: 10:00–16:00\, Monday: closed.

SUMMARY:Guided Tour at the National Historical Museum
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the grand\, stately building with the bronze statue of Kolokotronis on horseback out front. It’s nothing less than the Old Parliament House\, the very heart of Greece’s early political acts\, and it is throwing open its doors for the This is Athens City Festival.\n\nThis isn’t just a wander through a dusty museum; it’s a guided journey through the National Historical Museum. You’ll be stepping into the original debating chamber where the big decisions that shaped modern Greece were hammered out. It’s an atmospheric spot that keeps history grounded in the centre of the city. Our guide will lead you through a stunning collection that charts the Greek story from the fall of Constantinople through to the 20th century. SUMMARY:Andreas Spiliotopoulos: Heroes of Today
DESCRIPTION:Astrolavos Art Gallery presents the solo painting exhibition of Andreas Spiliotopoulos\, titled “Heroes of Today”—a body of work that brings classical art into a direct dialogue with contemporary pop culture. Drawing influence from the allegorical and monumental traditions of painting\, as well as the kinetic energy and narrative drive of comic books\, the artist creates dense\, multi-layered compositions teeming with parallel action.\n\nOn his canvases\, joy coexists with fear\, irony with drama\, and the mundane with the hyperbolic. These modern-day “heroes” are not supernatural figures\, but characters of contemporary life navigating fragility\, intensity\, and humour. The exhibition offers a vivid and penetrating look at our world\, suggesting that the comic and the tragic are\, ultimately\, two sides of the same narrative coin.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 12:00–16:00 and 17:00–20:00; Saturday: 11:00–15:00. SUMMARY:Dimitris Rentoumis: Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Crux Galerie presents the solo exhibition of Dimitris Rentoumis. Through his new series of works\, the artist “dialogues” with the transient and fragile nature of paper\, experimenting with the transition from a two-dimensional image to a three-dimensional variable materiality. He transforms paper surfaces into sculptural forms that occupy the space.\n\nWith a rich journey that includes studies at the Athens School of Fine Arts and the Netherlands\, as well as participation in prestigious programmes such as Jan van Eyck and Onassis Air\, the creator brings a proposal to Athens that balances the delicacy of the material with the dynamics of the installation.\n\nThis is a unique opportunity for the public to discover how paper can “breathe” and develop beyond the boundaries of the frame\, creating a living visual environment.\n\nExhibition duration: 1–30 May\n\nOpening hours: Wednesday–Friday: 12:00–20:00; Saturday: 12:00–16:00. Closed on Monday\, Tuesday & Sunday.

SUMMARY:Giorgos Louloudis: The Path of Light – The Innate
DESCRIPTION:In his new solo exhibition at Gallery Genesis\, Giorgos Louloudis places light centre stage\, moving beyond its role as a mere physical phenomenon. The artist turns his focus toward the small Greek chapels and their unique relationship with the landscape\, transforming them into potent symbols of hope\, silence\, and internal quest. These works function as quiet stations of contemplation\, where physical space and psychological experience are inextricably linked.\n\nThrough a powerful expressionist style\, Louloudis’s painted surfaces gain emotional intensity and depth. Light becomes an inner necessity\, a force that guides the viewer toward a deeply personal reading of the work. This exhibition speaks to the universal need for solace and the enduring power of hope\, asserting art’s ability to serve as a point of renewal and reflection in demanding times.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening: Thursday\, May 7 at 20:00. \nExhibition duration: 7–30 May \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening hours: Tuesday\, Thursday\, Friday: 12:00–21:00; Saturday: 12:00–15:00. SUMMARY:Guided Tours of the Cavafy Archive
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the This is Athens City Festival marks its fifth anniversary with a truly special collaboration. We’ve teamed up with the Onassis Foundation to invite you on a deeply personal journey through the life of one of the world’s most influential poets. For the first time as part of the festival\, we’re stepping inside a stunning 1910 listed building on Phrynichou Street. Since late 2023\, this spot in the heart of Plaka has become the new home of the Cavafy Archive\, and now\, its doors are opening for a series of exclusive guided tours.\n\nIt’s a rare chance to get up close and personal with the world of C.P. Cavafy by wandering through five specially curated rooms that recreate the atmosphere of his legendary home in Alexandria. Among the treasures\, you will find personal relics such as original furniture\, mementos\, and even the poet’s death mask\, alongside a remarkable collection of 966 surviving volumes in the library. The experience also showcases inspired art\, with works ranging from Theodore Ralli and Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika to contemporary artists moved by his poetry. Perhaps most poignantly\, the tour reveals the universe of Cavafy’s Athens through personal diaries and glowing letters from literary greats like Angelos Sikelianos\, revealing the poet’s deep\, timeless connection to this city.\n\nTo celebrate this new partnership\, the Onassis Foundation is offering 20 free guided tours throughout the month for festival-goers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dive deep into history\, memory\, and world-class art.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:It’s Story Time
DESCRIPTION:The This is Athens City Festival hosts a theatrical performance by the Athens Conservatoire Drama School titled “It’s Story Time” at Drakopoulou Park. Six short narratives\, inspired by iconic works of the classical and contemporary repertoire\, come to life under the direction of Sofia Paschou and Alexandros Chrysanthopoulos. With storytelling as the ultimate theatrical tool\, the performers explore different modes of expression\, alternating voices\, roles\, and perspectives.\n\nThe stage transforms into a living laboratory where the story is not simply presented\, but “built” in real-time before the eyes of the audience. This is a collective narrative exercise that bets on the power of presence and imagination\, offering a unique theatrical experience in the heart of the city.

SUMMARY:Tilda Swinton: Ongoing
DESCRIPTION:Marking its fifth year with a great collaboration with Onassis Stegi\, we offer an encounter with one of the season’s most keenly discussed artistic propositions. At its centre is Tilda Swinton\, a figure who has long moved with deliberate\, almost defiant ease between cinema\, fashion\, and the visual arts\, each appearance less a performance than a considered cultural gesture.\n\nThe exhibition Ongoing\, presented at the recently inaugurated Onassis Ready\, resists the tidy framing of a retrospective. Instead\, it unfolds as an active\, evolving dialogue between Swinton and a close circle of collaborators. Among them Pedro Almodóvar\, Luca Guadagnino\, Jim Jarmusch\, Joanna Hogg\, Tim Walker\, Apichatpong Weerasethakul\, Olivier Saillard\, and Derek Jarman. Through short films\, installations\, and photographic works\, the exhibition gently dismantles and reassembles the layers of her artistic identity\, moving between the dreamlike and the intimately personal. The result is a multi-stranded exhibition that illuminates her rich creative journey and her profound connection to contemporary art.\n\n20 invitations are available from the Onassis Stegi for 22\, 24\, 29\, and 31 May – 5 invitations per day.\n\nBookings open one week before each event at 12:00 noon and are made via this page.

SUMMARY:Athens Photo World: Michalis Pappas – Mitos\, The Thread of Greece
DESCRIPTION:For the seventh consecutive year\, Athens Photo World returns to the perimeter of the Megaron Athens Concert Hall transforming it into a street gallery\, showing a different and deeply personal perspective on Greek identity. As part of the This is Athens City Festival 2026\, this year’s exhibition features 13 selected photographs from the broader work of Michalis Pappas\, titled “Mitos: The Thread of Greece”.\n\nMoving away from the usual landmarks\, Pappas’s lens focuses instead on traditional costumes worn by contemporary figures\, proving that tradition is not a fossilised relic of the past\, but a living\, evolving process that breathes within our daily lives. It is an evocative connection between yesterday and today\, inviting passers-by to discover the “thread” that links us to our roots right in the heart of the urban fabric.

SUMMARY:Theatre Battles in Ancient Athens
DESCRIPTION:The This is Athens City Festival invites explorers of all ages to an educational adventure that reimagines ancient Athens through the eyes of two real-life legends. Auteas and Philoxenides\, two “choregoi” (the visionary sponsors of the time) from Aexone\, today’s Glyfada\, are making a symbolic comeback 2\,300 years later to guide us through the thrilling world of theatrical competitions.\n\nWhat exactly was the role of a sponsor back then? How were the city’s massive festivals organised? And why was theatre so much more than just a night out? Taking its cue from a rare honorary decree from 313/2 BC housed in the Epigraphical Museum\, this session is specially designed for families with children aged 7 to 10. Through storytelling\, discovery\, and a hands-on creative workshop\, kids will dive into ancient drama and the city’s public life in a way that’s interactive\, fast-paced\, and fun. It’s a chance to pull the past into the present with imagination\, play\, and a real connection to Athens’ cultural soul.\n\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.
