SUMMARY:Athens Urban Picnic 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Athens Urban Picnic is back\, and for the fifth year in a row\, we are keeping the tradition alive: May Day in the city starts on the grass! For the fifth year running\, we are launching at our favourite annual hangout to welcome May exactly as it should be: outdoors\, together\, and under the glorious spring sun. So\, dust off those picnic blankets and join us at Plato’s Academy Park—a historic green oasis which will once again transform into a giant\, vibrant hug in the heart of the city\, bursting with music\, colour\, and great fun.\n\nIf you’ve joined us before\, you know the score: the Athens Urban Picnic is more of a “vibe” than just an event. It’s all about sprawling across the grass with your mates\, spontaneous dancing\, and the sound of kids’ laughter mixing with the music—all in all\, living and breathing the city a little differently for the day.\n\nWhat’s on the cards? Starting early in the morning\, the city’s top radio producers will be spinning the perfect tracks to keep the energy high. Little ones can dive into a world of imagination through creative workshops\, musical theatre\, and interactive games throughout the park. As the sun begins to set\, the mood gets even more magical with open-air screenings and that lovely “summer is coming” breeze.\n\nIt’s an experience that truly has it all: music\, art\, relaxation\, and the best company in town. So\, grab your mat\, pack your hamper\, put on your brightest smile\, and help us kick off the This is Athens City Festival 2026. After all\, spring in Athens is meant to be shared.

SUMMARY:Fun Vibes Family Festival
DESCRIPTION:One of the city’s most beautiful green lungs is being transformed into a massive playground for a day. As part of the This is Athens City Festival\, Rizari Park is hosting an all-day fest dedicated to kids\, families\, and the pure joy of getting active.\n\nThink of it as the ultimate outdoor reset. Through a mix of sports\, games\, and creative activities\, this is a chance for families to bond away from the glow of their screens. Whether you’re competing in team games or trying out new wellness activities\, the focus is on teamwork\, well-being\, and all-around joy.\n\nIt’s the perfect excuse to grab the trainers\, round up the kids\, and head to the park for a day of fresh air and high energy. In a city as bustling as Athens\, this is a rare moment to slow down (or speed up!) and reconnect with nature and each other through play.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:The Gift That Remained Unopened!
DESCRIPTION:A secret parcel\, hidden among the centuries-old thickets of the National Garden\, awaits its first explorers. For the Athens City Festival 2026\, the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation invites young citizens to an unconventional adventure blurring the lines between detective work and fine art. Armed with magnifying glasses and “scientific” gloves\, children will track the artistic footprints of the legendary Stephen Antonakos.\n\nDrawing inspiration from the artist’s iconic “Travel Collages” and “Packages”\, participants dive into the world of conceptual art through immersive role-playing and team missions. They will discover how a simple journey transforms into a collage and how a sealed package can contain entire universes\, eventually crafting their own original masterpieces using organic materials gathered directly from the Garden’s ecosystem.\n\nFor 50 years\, this mysterious “gift” has sat patiently in the heart of the city’s most iconic green space. By turning Antonakos’ legacy of sealed artworks into a living\, breathing mystery\, this event offers a rare\, hands-on exploration of the intersection between art and the environment.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Children & the Bee
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of World Bee Day\, the National Garden bursts into life\, colour\, and youthful imagination with a special event dedicated to nature\, care\, and the power of small wonders. The area beside the children’s playground transforms into a dreamlike apiary landscape\, ready to welcome children and parents for an evening filled with warmth\, play\, and plenty of sweetness. Children can see and touch honeycombs with their own hands\, dress up as beekeepers in protective suits\, and learn about the bees’ home—the hive—as well as the smoker tool.\n\nThe star of the evening is Chrysanthi\, the brave little bee from the new children’s book by Lazaros Karaoulis\, CEO of the City of Athens IT and Municipal Operational Units agency\, titled “Chrysanthi: The Little Bee That Brought the Spring.” This tender story serves as a wonderful starting point for a conversation about nature\, the vital importance of bees\, and the immense impact even the smallest creature can have when acting with courage and love.\n\nMeeting Point: Beside the National Garden Children’s Playground.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Canvas Bag Meets Vintage Flair
DESCRIPTION:How were traditional costumes made\, and what secrets are hidden within their vibrant colours\, intricate patterns\, and fine details? \n\nThe National Historical Museum invites the younger friends of the This is Athens City Festival 2026 to an interactive session that brings folk tradition to life creatively and delightfully. The journey begins with a guided exploration of the Museum’s Folk Collection\, where children will get up close to the richness of Greek attire\, discovering the materials\, techniques\, and sheer craftsmanship that went into every handmade piece. But the experience doesn’t end with looking. Transitioning from observation to creation\, and under the expert guidance of the museum curators\, children will try their hand at the traditional block printing technique to decorate their very own canvas tote bag. By the end of the session\, folk art is no longer just a museum exhibit\, but their personal masterpiece to carry home. This is a brilliant opportunity for children to connect history with imagination and discover the past through their own hands.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.

SUMMARY:Butterfly Words
DESCRIPTION:Our young friends aged 6 to 12 are invited on a magical journey into the world of Greek Nobel Laureate Odysseas Elytis through the educational programme “Butterfly Words”. As part of the This is Athens City Festival 2026\, children will have the chance to get to know the work of one of the most significant poets in a fun and creative way\, using his very own words as building blocks.\n\nSymbols\, images\, and concepts from his earliest poems are transformed into an original linguistic game. Participants will deconstruct famous verses and experiment with their own original creations\, letting their imagination “fly” free.\n\nThis activity is only available in Greek.
