DESCRIPTION

This activity is only available in the Greek language.

The Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum is located on the northern slope of the Acropolis, in the modern district of Plaka. It was founded in 1976 to house the Canellopoulos collection of Αncient, Βyzantine and Post-byzantine art. The Canellopoulos collection started being formed in 1923 and was donated to the Greek state in 1972, in order to become available to the public.

The Museum’s central building is a typical example of Νeoclassical architecture. It was built in the late 19th century as the residence of the Michaleas family. In the 1960s it was expropriated by the Greek State and restored to house the new Museum. In the 2000s, on the initiative of Alexandra Canellopoulos and the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation, a new wing was added to the Museum.

At the museum’s basement there are remains of the medieval fortification of Athens, known as Rizokastro (13th century).

As part of the Athens City Festival, the curators of the Museum will give two guided tours at 11:00 and 13:00.
