The Bath House of the Winds

Museum of Modern Greek Culture
Kyrristou 8, Athens
The experiential and virtual exhibition “In the Bath: A trip to the body and the soul” is housed in the Bath House of the Winds, the only surviving public bath in Athens.
The building dates from the first period of Turkish rule (1453–1669) and stands near the Roman Forum and the Tower of the Winds. It was one of the “three pleasant hammams” of Athens, according to the Turkish traveller Evliyia Celebi, who visited the city in 1667 when it was known as the Hammam of Abid Efendi.
The building continued to function as a bathhouse until 1956, and today it is the property of the Ministry of Culture.
