The Invisible Museum ”The unusual story of a Mycenaean vase from Smyrna”

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens

Patision 44, Athens

17 May 2022

The Invisible Museum is an initiative of the National Archaeological Museum that aims to display antiquities that are usually hidden in the museum’s storage. The exhibit titled “Unknown History of a Mycenaean Vase from Smyrna” displays the first of 21 rare and unknown antiquities from Asia Minor that have been brought to light to commemorate 100 years since the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

The first object on display is an impressive crater that was created around 1300 BC in Argolida. It traveled to the other side of the Aegean in antiquity as a luxurious banquet object and was buried with its last owner. At the beginning of the 20th century, illegal excavations brought it to the antique shops of Smyrna. It eventually found its way to Athens and to the National Archaeological Museum, close to its place of origin. The precious vase with the enigmatic representation was forgotten for 110 years, emerging for the first time in the “Altar Hall of the Museum” (room 34) where it will remain on display until 30 May 2022.

On 17 May at 17:00, as well as on 8 and 22 May at 13:00, archaeologists will welcome visitors to the exhibition and will talk to them about the ancient journey of the precious crater, its enigmatic design, as well as the legal and illegal  archeological activity in Smyrna at the beginning of the 20th century.

In order to attend the exhibition, it is necessary to pre-purchase a ticket at the Museum front desk.

Admission will be available on a first come-first served basis.
