This walk aims to reconstruct a small yet significant and fascinating area of Athens along the banks of the Ilissos River (one of the "lost" rivers of Athens, hidden beneath central avenues), exploring its evolution over time and linking it to historical periods and elements of the city’s life and history.
It covers the development of the area in ancient and medieval times, with a focus on the period after Athens was declared the capital, and life in the city during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Key points of interest: Hadrian's Gate, the Olympic Temple, spots along Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, Zappeion (Hall and Garden), Panathenaic Stadium, Agia Fotini Ilissou.
The walk will be led by Tonia Kafetzaki, PhD in History, Educator (Evangeliki School of Smyrna).
Meeting point: Hadrian's Gate.
