A guided tour of the First Cemetery of Athens by the archaeologist Michalis Giohalas.

Since its foundation in 1837 until today, the First Cemetery of Athens has become one of the “monumental cemeteries” of Europe that serves as an open-air sculpture gallery and as the resting place of some of the most important personalities of recent Greek history. Monuments of known and unknown fighters, mercenaries, luminaries, warrior-poets, reflect the expectations and soul of an entire era, a nation, and compose the radiant image of a New Greece.
