One of the country’s most vibrant and close-knit communities, the Pontic Greeks, give the signal for the opening of the traditional festival season, transforming Koumoundourou Square into a place where history meets the present day. From 18:30 to 23:00, the square fills with music and songs carrying memories of centuries past, woven together with passionate dances and the enduring spirit of Pontic culture.
The evening begins with an exhibition of Pontic books and wooden sculptures, offering visitors the chance to explore different aspects of Pontic heritage before the celebration officially starts.
The artistic programme begins at 20:00, hosted by Lazos Terzas and Sakis Tanimanidis, who welcome the audience to this celebration of tradition and authentic festivity. The dance group Serra then takes the stage, presenting iconic Pontic dances before the entire square turns into one great folk dance circle open to everyone.
Leading the musical ensemble is the emblematic Kostas Karapanagiotidis, joined by talented singers Giorgos Dimitriadis, Mideia Chrousoulidou and Kostas Ageris. The rhythm of the evening is carried by Dimitris Kosmidis on the Pontic lyra (kementze), Orfeas Kosmidis on the daouli drum and Kostas Foulidis on keyboards, creating a night where respect for cultural roots becomes the spark for one of the city’s liveliest celebrations.
